Why do I have no sound on my iPad?

Can’t hear any sound on your iPad all of a sudden? Or is it a very subtle crackle, or does it go off at certain times? If you are experiencing these issues, it may be due to dust accumulated in your speaker, silent mode activated, or more.

So, let’s quickly see why there is no sound available on your iPad and how to fix it effectively.

Before tackling other fixes, check if your iPad settings are correct. If you don’t receive any notification sounds, the sound options for specific apps may be turned off. You can always check this from your notification settings.

Disconnect Bluetooth headphones

One of the first things to check why your iPad has no sound is to check if it is connected to wireless headphones or other accessories. If so, your iPad will not make any sound. So, to disconnect it, just turn off your Bluetooth from the control center to disconnect any device.

Similar to Bluetooth, if AirPlay is enabled on your iPad, you won’t hear any sound. So you can also disable it by slide down or up on your home screen and pressing the AirPlay icon.

Disable silent mode

When your iPad is in silent mode, it won’t play sound when playing videos, songs, or even when receiving calls. Chances are someone accidentally turned on Silent mode on your iPad.

So you can always check it on the left side of your device. If you can see the orange color on Ring/Silent switchthis indicates that silent mode is activated.

You can turn off the switch to disable silent mode. If you have an earlier version of iPad or iPad Mini, you might not find the ringer/silent switch. But, you can always disable silent mode from your control center. Depending on your iPad model, you only need slide up or down in the right corner of your home screen.

Remove dirt from speakers

If you haven’t cleaned your iPad in a while and you can’t hear any sound, chances are there are dirt particles inside the speakers. You can confirm this case by using headphones. If you can listen to the audio only in the headphones and not in the speakers, there may be problems with the speaker.

Dust particles can block many audio components inside your iPad speaker. So cleaning it can get the audio system working again. Here’s how:

  1. Remove your iPad case or any screen protector as they can trap dust.
  2. Take a cotton swab or small brush and gently clean the speaker area. If there is excess dirt, you can clean it with a toothpick.

In addition to cleaning your speakers, you may also want clean your charging port and headphone jack. This is because dirt inside these compartments can also affect the sound performance of your iPad. You can either use a soft-bristled toothbrush or use a vacuum cleaner on a low setting.

Another similar trick is to connect the headphones to the headphone jack multiple times. This is because the iPad may not detect that it is no longer connected to headphones, producing no sound on the speakers.

Install the new iOS update

In some cases, sound may also not be available on your iPad for unknown reasons. So it is best to give a quick fix to your device by installing the latest available software update.

Reset network settings

Close other applications

If you have a lot of apps running in the background, especially those using your microphone, you might not hear any sound. Such problems can also occur when quickly switching between applications. So, you can try closing all background apps to fix the audio problem.

Please note that sometimes your iPad may not be at fault. Some content on the web may not have sound at all. For example, you might notice “This video has no sound” when watching videos on Instagram.

Similarly, the sound settings of some games can also be muted or turned off. So we recommend you to check the app settings if other solutions don’t work.

Disable mono sound

If you have this setting enabled for some reason, you may not hear sound from one side of your headphones. So it is good to check and disable this option as it will balance and play the audio on both sides of the headphones.

Go to Accessibility > Hearing > Audio-visual. Next, slide the toggle for Mono Audio to turn it off.

Restart the iPad

If most of the solutions don’t work, it’s a good idea to restart your iPad to help fix the issues or bugs. Turn off your iPad by pressing the power button and the volume button.

It is best to let your device rest for about a minute. Then you can turn it back on.
