What To Expect From Season 3 (According To The Light Novel)

Sound! Euphonium released information regarding the upcoming third season along with an OVA movie. Sound! Euphonium will continue to be produced by the same studio as previous seasons, Kyoto Animations, known for popular anime such as A silent voiceNetflix original anime Violet Evergarden, and Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid.

Based on a light novel series of the same name by Ayano Takeda., Sound! Euphonium tells the story of a fluffy-haired protagonist named Kumiko Oumae, who begins the series trying to distance herself from her musical past. She has played the euphonium, a brass instrument known as the reference instrument in the tenor-bass range as far as military bands are concerned, in ensemble competitions in the past. After a tough result and a falling out with a bandmate in her last ensemble competition, she decides to focus on her life outside of music. Sound! Euphonium is a coming-of-age story that explores many facets of the world of ensemble bands, mends friendships, and strives together to achieve difficult goals. The first season premiered in 2015 and the second in 2016, along with multiple spinoffs over the years. Many Kyoto Animation productions were slowed down or stopped after the July 2019 arson attack on the infamous studio.

A brief recap

The first season begins with Kumiko trying to distance herself from her last ensemble competitions in the group. She begins her freshman year of high school making new friends and avoiding contact with old friends from the past. However, the two new friends she makes take an interest in the high school ensemble band and convince her to join. A former friend named Reina Kousaka whom she lost in her last ensemble contest also joins her high school group, and along with this, the high school group plans to compete in the national championships although it never has managed to do it before.


Kumiko must now train with the inexperienced set and mend her relationship with Reina, while rediscovering her love and passion for music. The first season focuses on these struggles during his first year as a high school student. Along with the first season, there were additional never-before-seen shorts that are compiled together for the first season’s Blu-Ray release, as well as a never-before-seen full episode that takes place between the auditions and the final performance of the first season. .

The second season focuses on the characters from the first season preparing for their next performance after a qualifying round for the Kansai regional competition. Wanting to keep up with the band’s practice, the band attends a summer camp run by their band manager as well as his friends who make a living with careers in music. However, the group is concerned about their future when a former member of the ensemble group wants to rejoin, a girl named Natsuki Nakagawa, and many second-year members are unhappy with the new addition to the ensemble. A movie was also released based on the secondary characters from the first two seasons called Liz and the Bluebird which follows Mizore Yoroizuka and Nozomi Kasaki, who prepare to perform a play based on a fairy tale the title is based on. As rehearsals go on, the two slowly drift apart, and the girls struggle to relate to the characters their roles in the set represent. The film won the Noburou Oofuji Award for Creative Expression at the 73rd Mainichi Film Awards. Another movie was released in 2019 and covers the first and second parts of Sound! Euphonium: Kitauji High School Concert Band, Turbulent Second Movement. Kumiko and Tomoe, a supporting character from previous seasons, also become club presidents.


The film focuses on the differences between freshmen and sophomores, learning to work together to succeed despite the quarrels and tensions that arise. It also covers, like the rest of the series, the ensemble’s attempts to compete in the national competition they worked for the entire series, especially on a regional level.

What can fans expect from Season 3?
