PLAYGROUND have announced a new album!
Title The death of death, the Greek post-metal/progressive band’s next album is their second effort, and is set to be released in March this year, via Pelagic records.
The album was recorded at MD recording studios through Nikos Michalodimitrakis, long contributor to vpcalist Stavros Markonis in film productions. The mixing was done by CACederberg (LEPROUS, SHINING etc) in Kristiansand, Norway, while the album was mastered by george Tanderø (MADRUGADA, SATYRICON, JAGA JAZZIST etc.) in Oslo, Norway.
Intending to demonstrate a deep understanding of the problems they produce, PLAYGROUND aim to evoke a feeling of strangeness closely linked to the cut-out film fragments of sound artists like the German Orson Hentschel. “We start with dynamic sound design structures, most of the time initiated by Orestes [Zafeirou, producer/composer]“, explains the guitarist Michael Kosirakis. “We then work in pairs expanding the musical space and creating variations and flourishes. Sometimes the lyrics and vocals dictate a change in quality, other times it’s one of the instruments. After many ideas are on the table Stavros and Orestes sit down together and come up with a song structure. After repeating this loop over and over again, we have a pretty good idea of all the parts. That’s when we hit the rehearsal space and worked out the details.
“The shortest sound units become extended themes”, explains the main composer Orestes Zafeirou. “Stable rhythmic blocks interact with unstable blocks. Noise becomes tone and melody. The sonic grains come together to form masses, the masses dissolve into a single entity. With each repetition comes change.
Along with the new album announcement, the band released a new music video for the first song taken from the upcoming album; the title song The death of death. Speaking of the new song and accompanying music video, Kosirakis said, “The death of death is a study of unity in opposition, a revelation of the contradictory aspects of reality, an expression of their mutual relationship. For the opportunity to share this first taste of the album with the world, we worked closely with the director Dmitri Anagnostou and director of photography Yannis Karabatsos, the duo we got to know thanks to the award-winning short film Mare Panacea For who Stavros composed the score. The director’s idea of a “study of movement” using early cinematographic techniques was inspired by Orestes‘ dialectically composed lyrics and was eventually adapted into the music video storyline. We felt that KarabatsosGrim photography was the perfect medium to explore the song’s contradictions… black and white, direction and diffusion, alienation and struggle, stillness and life.
