Iowa firefighters sound alarm over proposed bill

Fire marshals from dozens of Iowa municipalities are fighting legislation currently going through the Statehouse. The bill introduced by the governor’s office removes local control of fire codes and building codes. Firefighters oppose the plan, saying it compromises public safety and could lead to more catastrophic fires. Iowa Fire Marshalls Association President Mike Whitsell said, “Why are we reducing the safety of the people who are going to occupy these buildings and the responders who are going to contact them in an emergency? It doesn’t make sense. Doing what they are doing, reducing and removing local control, putting it in the hands of the state is extremely concerning to us and our organization, and should be extremely concerning to all citizens of the State of Iowa. “A representative from the Iowa Senate Republicans told KCCI that the goal is to have a uniform set of building codes statewide instead of each municipality having their own. The Association of Fire Marshals hopes to meet with the governor’s office on Monday to address their concerns.
