Charlie Puth came out with a new single, “Light Switch,” and the singer credits TikTok for inspiring his new music.

Charlie said E! News he first downloaded the popular video-sharing app because he wanted to “educate people on how I make music… [and] inspire people musically. He added, “The purpose of my downloading TikTok was not originally to advance my career.”

But that’s exactly what happened, Charlie admitted. TikTok inspired him to become more vulnerable and open to his thoughts and emotions, which bled into his songs. “It’s scary for people to know more about me than I know about me,” he noted. “But that’s probably why the music resonates more than ever before…I just exaggerate life’s experiences and put on more melody.”

It also led him to work on his new self-titled album, the 2018 sequel Voice Notes. “I’m proud of myself that I opened up…I like oversharing and I’m going to continue to do that. I don’t really see music coming out any different,” he said of his journey. “‘I call [my new album] Charly for this reason.”

It’s unclear when Charlie will release his third studio album, but he told E! he intends to drop it in the middle of the year. He also joked that he might try acting after debuting in a Frito-Lay Super Bowl commercial as the beatbox fox.

“Obviously I’m such a great actor now,” the 30-year-old joked. But, if given the chance to dust off his acting chops, Charlie says he’d love to make a buddy appearance. Jacob ElordIit is Euphoria. “I love how dark it is,” he said. “It’s so twisted in the grandest way. He prides himself on being twisted.
